Episode 75 is all about how to navigate your finances as an immigrant or someone who is completely unfamiliar to the world of personal finance.

Oyifijeh Aadum is founder of Immigrants Thrive, a financial education platform that serves immigrants to North America by empowering them with the knowledge, tools and resources they need to save more, pay off their debt, build wealth in a sustainable way and give back to their communities. A native of Nigeria, she worked in the international financial industry for over 8 years, and soon realized that many financial professionals are just selling products, rather than educating their clients. She uses her platform to provide the financial education needed to traverse the complicated world of finance and investment in North America. She also has a weekly podcast, Thrive With Fijeh, where she answers most pressing money and business questions from her community.

Episode 75 Highlights:

  • The “catch up” that immigrants have to play in their new host country—Access to our financial system in this country is hard, period. Now, add the layer of citizenship and newness….it’s ten-fold.
  • The power of knowledge—In Oyifijeh’s eyes, this country serves those who have a lot of money and those who have a lot of knowledge. For this reason, she chose to focus on educating her clients and her community, rather than simply continue selling financial products as she once was in her career.
  • The overwhelming project that is learning about finance—For anyone, learning about personal finance can feel like learning another language. Be patient with yourself, but also know that this is going to require time, energy, and commitment.
  • Feeling undeserving of a set of information—This piece is all imposter syndrome: that feeling that you don’t deserve something, that you shouldn’t be in a space. Everyone, including immigrants, have a right to knowledge. In this case, everyone has a right to develop financial literacy and wellness.
  • How to start your learning journey—Oyifijeh drops a truth bomb here. She says:

“Whatever you’re going to do, take small bites. Start with the smallest microcosm of change you can effect.”

This episode with Oyifijeh will leave you feeling affirmed, like your journey into personal finance education is absolutely yours, especially as an immigrant. She reminds us that this is scary—but even then, take the fear as a sign that you are on the right track.
