Multiple income streams are basically my love language, so when Meghan Lim (you know her as Meghan Makes Money) showed up on the show, I knew it was about to be a good one. She went from a $78K corporate finance job to a six-figure creator business with over 160,000 followers in about two and a half years, and she’s breaking down exactly how she did it.

From Side Hustles to Six Figures

Meghan’s been hustling since middle school, selling celebrity posters and candy before she even knew what a side hustle was. But the real turning point came in 2023 when she lost her corporate finance job. She used her severance to travel through Asia for a month, and that trip cracked everything open. She came home knowing she wanted to be a full-time content creator, made a promise to post daily until she replaced her income, and seven months later, one video went viral and changed everything.

That viral video? A simple paycheck breakdown showing how much she made and how she split it. It hit 5.8 million views and drove a flood of sales to her budget template.

“You have to kind of reframe that mindset to, you’re not selling, you’re serving. Think about the benefits that people receive from your service or your product.”

Money Messages from Home

Meghan’s parents immigrated from the Philippines and worked as nurses, and they wanted her and her sister to follow that same secure path. She studied finance in college (which, fun fact, has almost nothing to do with personal finance), got a corporate job, and then got laid off anyway. The security her parents pushed for didn’t fully hold up, but the lessons about saving and investing stuck with her. Meanwhile, watching her aunt run restaurants and rental properties showed her there was another way to build wealth entirely.

Side Hustles Worth Your Time (and Which Ones Aren’t)

Before the creator stuff took off, Meghan’s go-to side hustle was pet sitting through Rover and Wag. She started at $25 a night, over-delivered for her first client with photos and updates, and kept raising her rates as demand grew. Eventually she was charging $100 a night and her clients kept coming back.

Her advice for picking a side hustle: start with reselling stuff you already own (eBay, Facebook Marketplace, it’s basically free money sitting in your closet), then find something you’re actually passionate about. For her, that was pet sitting. Food delivery? Hard pass. She didn’t enjoy the parking struggles or the lack of tips.

How Meghan Actually Makes Money Now

These days Meghan’s income comes from a mix of sources: affiliate marketing (especially finance products like high-yield savings accounts and travel credit cards), brand partnerships, one-on-one coaching, and the occasional UGC content for brands. She’s intentional about not relying on any single source, especially brand deals, which can bring in big checks but are inconsistent.

The Disconnect Between Followers and Revenue

A lot of creators think follower count is the goal, but Meghan’s take is that it’s all about your engaged audience. You don’t need a massive following to sell, you need people who trust you and take action. Her advice for anyone scared to sell: remind yourself that you’re not just selling a product, you’re selling years of expertise, and that’s worth charging for.

“Ask yourself, do you remember the last three story posts you looked at? No. No one cares. So just sell your shit anyways.”

What to Have in Place Before Pitching Brands

Meghan’s approach is to think of herself as a brand and show products she genuinely uses, organically, so partnerships feel authentic instead of like an ad. Brands care less about your follower count and more about whether your audience actually takes action, whether that’s clicking a link, commenting, or converting. Affiliate marketing in the finance space is one of her favorite underrated strategies, especially when you weave it into content and email newsletters.

The Cartier Ring and the Abundance Mindset

Meghan told herself she’d buy her first Cartier ring once she hit a six-figure net worth. She hit that milestone last year and still didn’t buy it. It wasn’t until a trip to the mall with her parents (and a little encouragement from her dad) that she finally got the $2,800 ring with the diamond.

For Meghan, it wasn’t really about the ring. It was about shifting from scarcity to abundance, knowing that if she ever needs more money, she can make more. We talked about how hard it can be for first-gen kids especially to slow down and celebrate, because there’s this underlying fear that if you stop moving, everything you worked for disappears.

Redefining Success After Leaving Corporate

Once Meghan hit her early financial goals, she found herself asking a bigger question: if money wasn’t the issue, what should she actually be working toward? For her, the answer is purpose. She wants to give back to her community by helping people get financially literate, especially other finance creators who are making content but not monetizing it.

Final Advice

Meghan’s biggest piece of advice for anyone listening: you are capable, and you don’t need permission to start making money. If you have a hobby, a skill, or knowledge that’s helped you, someone else needs it too. Trust yourself and go after it.

Key Takeaways

  • Diversify your income. Relying on one stream, especially brand deals, makes your business fragile.
  • You don’t need to be an expert to start. Document your journey, people connect with the process more than the polished result.
  • Reframe selling as serving. You’re not asking for money, you’re offering something that genuinely helps.
  • It takes repetition. People need to see something 14-17 times before they take action, so don’t be afraid to repeat yourself.
  • Affiliate marketing in finance is underrated. Recommending tools you already use can become a real income stream.
  • Reward yourself for milestones. Celebrating your wins helps break a scarcity mindset and build abundance.
  • Surround yourself with people doing what you want to do. Proximity to ambition changes what feels possible.
