Sahirenys Pierce is one of the OG Latinas of personal finance on the internet — and she’s back on the show with a brand new book. The High 5 Banking Method was born out of one of the scariest moments of her life: her son’s open heart surgery. Having her finances organized meant she could focus entirely on her child instead of scrambling for money. In this episode, we break down the full system — and why one checking account and one savings account is keeping you stuck.

Most of us were taught one checking account, one savings account — and figure it out from there. But what if that setup is the exact reason you can’t seem to get ahead? What if there’s a better system that doesn’t require you to be a spreadsheet girly or a finance nerd to make it work?

That’s exactly what Sahirenys Pierce of Poised Finance and Lifestyle has been teaching for years — and now she’s put it all into a book.

She Learned About Money While Her Family Was Losing Everything

Sahirenys’ parents immigrated from the Dominican Republic with big ambitions. They read all the books — Rich Dad Poor Dad, Who Moved My Cheese — but they learned how to make money without ever learning how to manage it. When 2008 hit, her family lost their home.

“I started creating a relationship with money based on fear,” she shares. Watching her parents lose everything set Sahirenys on a path to understand money in a way her community never had access to — which eventually led her to financial planning, a career at Merrill Lynch, and the creation of a system that would change her family’s life.

Less than 4% of certified financial planners are people of color. No wonder so many of us walk into a bank and feel like an outsider — because the system was never designed with us in mind.

The Story Behind the High 5 Banking Method

The High 5 Banking Method wasn’t born in a boardroom. It was born in a hospital.

When Sahirenys found out her son had a heart defect and would need open heart surgery, she did what she always does: she made a plan. She calculated every cost — the surgery, the insurance, the hotel stays near Children’s Hospital in LA — and opened a dedicated savings account just for her son. No emergency fund in there. No vacation money. Just her son’s surgery fund.

“When they asked me how I was going to pay for my son’s surgery, I wanted to hand them my card with confidence that I knew I had the money.”

During the two weeks her son was in the hospital, her father-in-law also passed away, and her husband — self-employed — lost a full month of income. But not once did she worry about the bills. They were covered. The emergency fund was intact. The system held.

That’s when she counted the accounts on her hand: two checkings, three savings. High five. The High 5 Banking Method was born.

Breaking Down the 5 Accounts

The system is built around five purpose-driven accounts: two checking accounts and three savings accounts.

  • Bills Checking Account: All your mandatory expenses — housing, transportation, minimum debt payments, insurance, and groceries.
  • Lifestyle Checking Account: Everything else. Eating out, entertainment, birthday parties, quinceañeras — your fun money lives here.
  • Emergency Fund Savings: Your financial protection against life’s uncertainty. High-yield savings recommended here.
  • Short-Term Goals Savings: Goals you’ll accomplish in under a year — vacations, the annual book buy, whatever you’re building toward.
  • Long-Term Goals Savings: Big-ticket items like a wedding or a home down payment — anything that takes 1 to 5 years to save for.

And no — you don’t have to open five brand new accounts from scratch. You can repurpose what you already have. If your current bank charges maintenance fees, that’s your sign to start shopping around. There are options.

The Very Latina Reality of the Emergency Fund

Let’s be real: in our communities, the emergency fund can quickly become the whole family’s emergency fund. Sahirenys gets it — she’s Dominican.

“If I tell my family I have $20, they’ll be like, mi hija, dame de un telo a re. Those are for emergencies.”

Her advice: help your family build their own financial nest egg instead of depleting yours. Lead by example. Have the awkward conversations. Set the boundary with love — and hold it.

The SOP: Your Financial Game Plan for When Life Goes Sideways

One of the most underrated parts of this system is what Sahirenys calls the SOP — Standard Operating Procedure. Instead of panicking when something goes wrong, you and your partner sit down in advance and decide: what do we cut, what do we keep, and what do we reduce?

Go through every expense — bills, lifestyle, savings goals — and decide the trigger point. When will you cut Netflix? When will you pause the vacation fund? Getting aligned before a crisis means you’re not arguing during one.

And while you’re at it, go through your subscriptions. Jannese did it at the end of last year and was floored. “Girl, you’re just out here giving away money for free because you didn’t take the time.” Sometimes you need to activate your inner Karen — or Latina — and call your insurance company. You’d be surprised what they’ll do to keep you.

The Four Game Changers for Running Your Household Without Losing Your Mind

Beyond the banking system, Sahirenys has four household systems that have completely changed the tone of her home:

  • The High 5 Banking Method: Hyper-organizing your finances so every dollar has a purpose.
  • The Monthly Meal Plan: Plan your meals, your eat-out nights, your grocery budget — all in one sitting. No more “what’s for dinner?” chaos.
  • The Semi-Annual Book Buy: Twice a year, stock up on non-perishables — cleaning supplies, personal care items, canned goods. Never run out of the basics again.
  • The All-Hands Meeting: Once a month, sit down with your partner (or roommate) and go over the budget, upcoming events, the meal plan, the cleaning schedule. Make it a team effort. Your mental load will thank you.

As Jannese puts it: “Money doesn’t have to be something that’s super freaking stressful. It can be something you’re proactive with.” That’s the whole point.
